First Look at New Decicco & Sons in Sleepy Hollow, the Company’s Largest in Westchester

It’s not every day your grocery experience includes marble bathrooms, a comfy room for nursing mothers and a large bar with a view of the Tappan Zee aka Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.

Jeanne Muchnick

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for what DeCicco & Sons offers at its new bi-level Sleepy Hollow store located in the Edge-on-Hudson development.

Set to open at 7:30 a.m., March 28, the sprawling 50,000 square-foot store — the largest in Westchester (only Brewster is bigger) and the second that’s been built from the ground up (Somers was the first) — also features a state of the art enhanced deli section with a carving and smoked meats section, a wider inventory of prepared foods (think more Asian and Latin products), a glass elevator and two events spaces, each of which has its own kitchen.

There’s almost no detail the owners behind the business — brothers John and Joe DeCicco Sr. and sons Chris, Joe Jr. and John Jr. — haven’t thought of, including nods to Sleepy Hollow with a Headless Horseman artistic cutout suspended behind the beer taps and purse pegs under the bar in the shape of the Headless Horseman.

Of course there are also rows and rows of grocery and pantry items.

“It’s uplifting,” said John DeCicco Sr. of the light-filled industrial space that has a cathedral feel thanks to its vaulted ceilings and numerous windows. “The store is so grand, once you’re in here, you won’t want to leave.”

As ESG efforts take on ever-greater importance in the business world, the grocery industry has diligently kept pace with this trend

Progressive Grocer Staff
As environmental, social and governance (ESG) efforts take on ever-greater importance in the business world, the grocery industry has diligently kept pace with this trend. Retailers, suppliers and solution providers alike are striving not only to implement programs that will further their goals in these areas, but also to ensure that conscientious customers know about it, so they can make their purchases accordingly.

The companies that we’re honoring with this year’s Impact Awards have done outstanding work to address such varied issues as food waste, hunger, employee health and wellness, greenhouse-gas emissions, responsible sourcing, and regenerative agriculture, to name just a few. Such far-reaching actions are becoming the norm among grocery industry businesses as the public increasingly demands to know the stories behind the food it buys, as well as how companies treat their employees and neighbors.

Community Service/Local Impact

DeCicco & Sons

Family-owned and -operated DeCicco & Sons operates 10 stores across Westchester County and into Putnam County in New York City’s northern suburbs. Its deep connection to these communities is why the independent grocer is committed to providing support to its neighbors in need.

In addition to supporting organizations such as local PTAs, breast cancer initiatives and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, among other causes, DeCicco & Sons seeks out innovative opportunities to aid communities when challenges arise.

For instance, when Superstorm Sandy hit in 2012, DeCicco & Sons opened its stores’ freezers to help local residents without power avoid losing their perishable food. This act of generosity has been repeated since then by the grocer’s stores in several communities they serve when winter storms have caused long-lasting power outages.

DeCicco & Sons also puts its sourcing capabilities, as well as its kitchens and bakeries, at the disposal of local causes, and has donated tons of food to local food pantries and other organizations.

Supporting communities through activism, volunteerism, material donations and financial support is second nature to DeCicco & Sons. Helping a diverse range of organizations enables the grocer to deepen its positive impact in the communities that it serves.

Construction began in August and is expected to be finished in the next 16 months. This will be the company’s 11th store, having locations in Ardsley, Armonk, Bedford, Brewster, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham and Somers.

The new market will deploy a series of green initiatives for both construction and operation and is set to be built to LEED certification standards, keeping energy efficiency at the top of mind. Market operations will include a natural refrigeration system, with heat expelled from refrigeration being recycled for use as the market’s heat and hot water in cold weather months. DeCicco & Sons will also install the company’s largest solar array to date.

The DeCicco & Sons is the first retail construction underway at the expansive 70-acre mixed-use community. The project, located along the Hudson River, has expanded to meet demand. Its first phase — condominiums by Toll Brothers — sold out prior to construction. Also almost sold out: Nearly 92 townhomes. More than 98% of 425 apartment residences have also been leased.

In other culinary news, The Daymark condominium residences, now under construction on the waterfront, will feature the first waterfront restaurant. The restaurant operator has not yet been selected so stay tuned to The Journal News/lohud for details.

Moving into its second phase, the master development team of Biddle Real Estate Ventures and PCD Development announced a series of new retail and residential construction projects on-site. They include:

The Sales Gallery for waterfront condominium residences at The Daymark opened in July with building completion set for spring 2025. Currently under construction and led by Houston-based Hines as development manager, it’s the first building directly on the waterfront and will add 100 new homes to the community.

Site work began in August for 90 new townhomes and a clubhouse by Sun Homes. This new neighborhood borders both Kingsland Point Park and the new Tappan Zee Park and features park and river views. Sales are anticipated to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

Plans for a medical office building are set to be presented to the Village of Sleepy Hollow Planning Board later this fall.

Planning for new parkland and open space is underway following the opening of phase one of the Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk, which restored access to a section of shoreline that had been closed for more than a century.

Four years since home sales began on the expansive 70-acre site along the waterfront, the development has proved to be among the most sought-after in the Metro New York region. In its first phase, all condominium residences by Toll Brothers sold-out prior to construction, as did nearly all of the 92 townhomes offered.
New condominium residences under construction at The Daymark have been a hot commodity at Edge-on-Hudson, with 25% of homes already under contract within just two months of the Sales Gallery’s opening. The Daymark will also include more than 9,000 square feet of retail space, featuring the first waterfront restaurant in the community.

The first retail construction at Edge-on-Hudson began in August as site work for the 11th DeCicco & Sons Market in Westchester County got underway. The market’s striking design recalls the industrial heritage of the region, featuring a brick exterior, a standing seam metal roof, glass and steel cupolas, steel lintels, and clearstory windows. The market’s mezzanine is also set to include a beer garden and restaurant concept.

The DeCicco & Sons Market will deploy a series of green initiatives for both construction and operation and is set to be built to LEED certification standards, keeping energy efficiency at the top of mind. Market operations will include a natural refrigeration system, a non-ozone-depleting refrigerant that DeCicco & Sons was the first to bring to Westchester County. Heat expelled from the refrigeration system will be recycled for use as the market’s heat and hot water in cold weather months. DeCicco & Sons will also install the company’s largest solar array to date.

BREV Managing Member Peter Chavkin commented, “Completion of Phase 1 at Edge-on-Hudson has demonstrated that this community offers best-in-class amenities in residential construction, easy transit access and an extraordinary setting along the Hudson River. The combination is proving very compelling for both buyers and renters.”

Jonathan Stein, Founder and Managing Director of PCD Development, added, “It’s exciting to see retail construction on-site, to compliment new parkland and residences already completed or underway. We look forward to welcoming the DeCicco & Sons Market, as well as a waterfront restaurant at The Daymark, and additional retail and office components currently in design.”

Edge-on-Hudson is located just 25 miles north of Manhattan, within walking distance between two Metro-North train stations (Tarrytown and Philipse Manor), affording express access to Grand Central in just 38 minutes. Edge-on-Hudson is set to include 1,177 townhomes, condos and apartments; a 140-room boutique hotel; 135,000 square feet of retail space and 35,000 square feet of office space, in addition to more than 16 acres of new parkland. Phase 1 of the new Sleepy Hollow RiverWalk at Edge-on-Hudson was recently completed and deeded to the Village of Sleepy Hollow. More information is available at www.edgeonhudson.com.

The publication has honored the excellence of America’s independent food retailers for more than a decade.

“It’s always tough to pick our Outstanding Independents honorees, but this year proved particularly difficult,” noted PG Managing Editor Bridget Goldschmidt. “There was so much creativity spotlighted in the submissions, and so many examples of how important these grocers are to their communities. Our lineup of honorees for 2023 is especially strong, as these retailers have come out of the other side of a challenging pandemic, trailed by supply chain woes and record-high inflation, with their businesses and loyal customer bases largely intact – incredibly, many were even able to thrive despite the adverse circumstances.”

BEDFORD, N.Y. – Grocery store chain DeCicco & Sons opened a new location in Bedford on Friday, March 25.
The chain, which now has nine locations in Westchester and one in Putnam, began in 1973 with a small storefront in the Bronx.

John DeCicco, the CEO of DeCicco & Sons, said that the Bedford location had been in the works for 10 years. It’s filling the space left vacant by Key Food Marketplace.

“We’ve been working on the Bedford location for a long time,” DeCicco said. “We actually secured and worked on the lease from at least all the way back to 2012. Finally, we made it here. Everyone’s been really impressed with the store so far, lots of positive feedback.”

DeCicco later said that this store also uses an environmentally friendly refrigeration system. The store is also looking into using solar energy.

“This store is our seventh location in Westchester that features a natural refrigerant system,” DeCicco said. “What that means is that all of the refrigerants in the store occurred from the environment and does not harm the ozone layer. We were one of the first stores in New York State to actually implement this technology back in 2014 in our Larchmont store. Since then, we’ve been upgrading all of our existing stores and all of our new stores opening with this new technology.”

DeCicco & Sons is located at 422 Old Post Road in Bedford. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. On Sundays, the store is open from 8 to 7:30 p.m.

DeCicco & Sons is expanding. The company says it provides a one-stop shop for specialty and gourmet groceries as well as everyday needs.

“We are your destination for specialty and gourmet groceries, as well as all of your everyday needs. We offer a full-service deli, chopped salad station, coffee and juice bar, bakery, fresh sushi, fully staffed butcher and seafood department, and beer,” the company write on Facebook.

DeCicco & Sons has locations in Brewster, Ardsley, Armonk, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham, and Somers.

Two more locations are joining the Brewster, Ardsley, Armonk, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham and Somers stores.

DeCicco & Sons plan to open up a Bedford location “this winter.”

“We are excited to open our Bedford location,” the company wrote on Facebook “We are scheduled to open this Winter!”

An official opening date isn’t clear.

DeCicco & Sons is also set to open up a new location in Sleepy Hollow in the near future.

In June 2021, the Village of Sleepy Hollow Planning Board approved plans for the stunning 30,000 square foot market, which will include a dramatic second-story glass-enclosed beer and wine café, oriented towards the Hudson River.

An adjacent 10,000 square foot retail space was also approved, of which 5,000 square feet are earmarked for a pharmacy.

“We’re grateful to have received approval for construction of what we feel will be one of our finest markets to date in Westchester County. Sleepy Hollow and the new Edge-on-Hudson mixed-use community along the waterfront make for a compelling location and we’re excited to be a part of all that’s happening in the Village,” John DeCicco Jr., CEO, DeCicco & Sons, stated.

DeCicco & Sons hopes to open the Sleepy Hollow store in 2022 though a timeline hasn’t been announced.

DeCicco & Sons is widely known and regarded for their world-renowned beer department, award-winning prepared Gourmet Foods, and specialty departments, officials say. DeCicco & Sons exclusively carries antibiotic and hormone-free, humanely raised meat from family farms. Other notable items include store-made mozzarella, fresh guacamole, and a full-service bakery.

Fans of the specialty grocery store will be happy to know that DeCicco & Sons recently announced its plans to open a new market in Bedford in March.

The new store will be the 10th store for the chain which also has an 11th location planned for Edge-on-Hudson in Sleepy Hollow.

No word yet on when that store will open.

Other DeCicco & Sons stores in the area include Ardsley, Armonk, Brewster, Eastchester, Harrison, Larchmont, Millwood, Pelham, and Somers.
