Indoor and outdoor balcony seating, couches where you can lounge with a cup of coffee and your laptop, a large bar to grab a cold craft brew and a sizable kitchen and catering space able to handle special events.

Sound like your local grocery store? It does if you live in Somers.

It’s all part of the new family-run DeCicco & Sons Somers, which opens at 7:30 a.m. Friday, May 3. Located on Route 202, the store has been designed to be more than a place where customers shop, according to John DeCicco Jr., the chain’s CEO.

Along with aisles and aisles of grocery and specialty items including hormone-free, antibiotic free meats, seafood and produce, the new DeCicco has been created, like its other stores, to be a place where people gather.

“We want our stores to be comfortable and inviting, as well as convenient,” he said.

To that end, the store’s decor features the work of local artists and artisans. It also pays homage to Somers’ history with the famed Barnum & Bailey Circus, thanks to local resident Hachaliah Bailey, an early owner of the famed traveling spectacle.

This is the eighth location for DeCicco & Sons, but at 20,000-square-feet, the Somers location is its largest. As with all of its stores, this one has been built to be sustainable and green. DeCicco Jr. claims his supermarkets are the first to be heated by recycled radiant heat from earth-friendly refrigeration systems.

They were also among the earliest grocery chains in the state to eliminate the sale of tobacco, and to eliminate single-usage plastic bags.
